Delivering Stronger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Outcomes supports learners to move from cultural awareness to cultural competence. It focuses on the practical strategies, behaviours, and tools needed to apply cultural knowledge effectively and respectfully in everyday situations. While it is designed as the second stage in our three-part learning pathway, it can also be taken as a standalone course for those who have completed an equivalent awareness program.
The course builds the capability to engage respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, and to identify and challenge culturally unsafe practices and assumptions. Participants explore the impact of racism, bias, and exclusion in policy, service delivery, and workplace culture, while developing strategies to support cultural safety, inclusive communication, and shared decision-making. They also reflect on their own role in shaping culturally capable systems, teams, and environments, regardless of position, profession, or sector.
Developed by the Centre for Cultural Competence Australia (CCCA) and guided by the Commonwealth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Capability Framework, this training develops culturally informed knowledge, skills, and behaviours that can be applied across a wide range of contexts. By the end of the course, participants are equipped to take meaningful and accountable action and are well prepared to progress to the final stage of the pathway, Embedding Cultural Safety: Trauma-Informed Leadership and Practice, where cultural capability becomes a sustained part of leadership and everyday practice.
This course is designed for individuals across all roles and sectors who want to move from cultural awareness to cultural competence. While it is recommended for those who have completed Understanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures or an equivalent awareness course, it is also suitable for anyone ready to apply cultural knowledge in practical, accountable ways.
It is ideal for people who want to strengthen their ability to contribute to culturally safe and responsive workplaces, services, and systems. The course supports participants to recognise their influence, challenge culturally unsafe practices, and embed cultural capability into everyday interactions and decision-making.
